Tamso Ma Jyotirgamaya
Does anyone have first-hand experience of the Right To Information (RTI) Act, ie in using the Act for personal/ professional purposes? I’m trying to figure out how widespread and user-friendly the Act is in practice.
My interest has been piqued by Arvind Kejriwal’s Magsaysay Award, and the press that Parivartan has been getting. Sounds very promising. At the risk of sounding trite, a little transparency can have a huge impact on India’s appalling corruption.
Would love to hear first-hand accounts from citizens. If you have a story about the RTI’s usefulness (or lack, thereof) let us know — through the comments section or via email (ppkothari-at-stringinfo.com). If relevant, we’ll post it.
First-and-half-hand experience with the Rajasthan RTI (precursor to Indian RTI, passed in 2000). The following post is of the jan sunvai held in the panchayat headquarters of Janawad, Rajasthan.

Yours truly feels that RTI is only a tool, no more or less potent than any other law in our books. How dilligently it is used will determine its effectiveness.

For practical information on RTI, you may want to join the HumJanenge yahoogroup (link). It is full of people’s first hand experiences, including problems and success stories, as well as practical advice on how to go about filing RTI applications. As with any yahoogroup, you might have to spend some time searching to find what you need. Or you can simply post a query, and wait for people to reply. Also see my posting on RTI (here).
